The triangle inequality: when three lengths make a triangle
Mathematics Prep 1 Term 1, Unit 4, Lessons 2–3
GoalDecide whether three lengths can be the sides of a triangle and find the range of a third side.
New words
triangle inequality · the sum of any two sides is greater than the third sideinequality · a statement that one amount is greater or smaller than anotherconstruct · to draw accurately with a ruler and compasssum · the result of adding
Explanation
The shortest way between two points is a straight line, so two sides of a triangle together must be longer than the third. A triangle with sides a, b and c exists only when a + b > c, a + c > b and b + c > a. It is enough to check that the two shorter sides add up to more than the longest side. If the sum is exactly equal, the sides lie flat on one line. If a triangle has two sides of 5 cm and 9 cm, the third side x must be greater than the difference 9 − 5 = 4 and smaller than the sum 5 + 9 = 14, that is 4 < x < 14. To construct a triangle with sides 3, 4 and 5 cm: draw AB = 5 cm; with the compass point at A draw an arc of radius 4 cm; with the point at B draw an arc of radius 3 cm; the arcs meet at C; join AC and BC.
Worked examples
Can 3, 4 and 5 be sides? The two shorter sides give 3 + 4 = 7, and 7 > 5. So yes, a triangle exists.
Can 8, 4 and 4 be sides? The two shorter sides give 4 + 4 = 8, which is not greater than 8. So no: the two short sides would lie flat along the long one.
Range of the third side. Two sides are 5 cm and 9 cm. The difference is 4 and the sum is 14, so 4 < x < 14. Whole-number values of x: 5, 6, …, 13, which is 9 values.
Straw triangles. With a grown-up, cut straws or strips of card to 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 cm. Try to make triangles from different three-strip sets. Which sets work and which stay flat? Check each with the rule.
Practice
1
Can 5, 6 and 10 be the sides of a triangle?
5 + 6 = 11 > 10, so yes.
2
Can 3, 5 and 9 be the sides of a triangle?
3 + 5 = 8 < 9, so no.
3
Two sides of a triangle are 7 cm and 10 cm. Between which two numbers is the third side?
Between 10 − 7 = 3 and 10 + 7 = 17, so 3 < x < 17.
4
Describe how to construct a triangle with sides 4, 5 and 6 cm.
Draw AB = 6 cm. Arc of radius 4 cm from A and arc of radius 5 cm from B (or the other way round). Where they cross is C. Join AC and BC.

Mona says 4, 4 and 8 make an isosceles triangle because two sides are equal. What is wrong?
The two short sides add up to 8, not more than 8, so no triangle exists at all.
