Distances, routes and shapes on the plane
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Find the distance between (−8, 5) and (−3, 5).
Same side: 8 − 3 = 5 units.
2
Find the distance between (4, −6) and (4, 3).
6 + 3 = 9 units.
3
On a map 1 unit is 200 m. A bus goes from (−2, 1) to (−2, 5) and then to (3, 5). How many units and how many metres?
4 units, then 2 + 3 = 5 units. Total 9 units = 1,800 m.
4
Three vertices of a square are (−2, −2), (2, −2) and (2, 2). Find the fourth vertex and the perimeter.
The fourth vertex is (−2, 2). The side is 2 + 2 = 4, so the perimeter is 16 units.
5
A rectangle has vertices (1, 2), (6, 2), (6, −1) and (1, −1). Find its perimeter and area.
Sides 5 and 3. Perimeter = 2 × 8 = 16 units. Area = 15 square units.
