1
3,000 sweets are packed in bags of 48. How many full bags are there and how many sweets are left?
3,000 ÷ 48 = 62 remainder 24, because 48 × 62 = 2,976. There are 62 full bags and 24 sweets left.
2
Write 18 and 48 as products of primes and find their GCF and LCM.
18 = 2 × 3 × 3 and 48 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3. Shared: 2 and 3, so the GCF is 6. The LCM is 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 = 144.
3
Solve and check: (a) 12 + x = 35, (b) x ÷ 5 = 14.
(a) x = 35 − 12 = 23; 12 + 23 = 35. (b) x = 14 × 5 = 70; 70 ÷ 5 = 14.
4
A lift may carry at most 6 people. Write an inequality for the number of people p and list the whole-number solutions that make sense.
p ≤ 6. The sensible solutions are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
5
Find the mean, median and range of 12, 15, 9, 20, 14.
The total is 70, so the mean is 14. In order: 9, 12, 14, 15, 20, so the median is 14. The range is 20 − 9 = 11.
