Solid shapes and measuring volume with cubes
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Complete the table: cube, cylinder, square pyramid. Give flat faces and vertices for each.
Cube: 6 flat faces, 8 vertices. Cylinder: 2 flat faces, 0 vertices. Square pyramid: 5 flat faces, 5 vertices.
2
Volume or capacity? (a) A jug holds 2 L of milk. (b) A wooden block takes up 500 cm³ of space.
(a) Capacity. (b) Volume.
3
A box is 7 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm high. How many unit cubes fill it?
7 × 3 = 21 per layer. 21 × 2 = 42 cubes. Volume 42 cm³.
4
Estimate the volume of a box 21 cm by 9 cm by 4 cm by rounding, then find the exact volume.
Estimate: 20 × 10 × 4 = 800 cm³. Exact: 21 × 9 = 189 and 189 × 4 = 756 cm³.
5
Make as many different boxes as you can from exactly 8 unit cubes. Write their length, width and height.
For example 8 × 1 × 1, 4 × 2 × 1 and 2 × 2 × 2. All have volume 8 cm³.
