Review: multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals

Discover Mathematics P5: Term 1, Units 1–6, Review
GoalReview the standard methods for multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals, remainders and estimating.
New words
partial products · products of the parts of a number that are added to get the whole productquotient · the answer to a divisionremainder · what is left over after dividing
Explanation

To multiply multi-digit numbers, split one number into tens and ones, find the partial products and add them: 347 × 26 = 347 × 20 + 347 × 6. For decimals, multiply as if there were no points, then count the decimal places in both factors and give the product the same number of places. To divide, estimate with compatible numbers, divide place by place, and write the remainder or continue with zeros. When the divisor is a decimal, multiply both numbers by 10 or 100 first. Always check: multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder.

StepWorkResult
1347 × 206,940
2347 × 62,082
36,940 + 2,0829,022
Worked examples
Work out 347 × 26 with partial products: 6,940 + 2,082 = 9,022. Estimate: 350 × 25 = 8,750, which is close.
Work out 1,500 ÷ 36. 36 × 41 = 1,476 and 1,500 − 1,476 = 24, so 1,500 ÷ 36 = 41 remainder 24. Check: 36 × 41 + 24 = 1,500. 2,184 ÷ 52 = 42, because 52 × 42 = 2,184.
Work out 0.35 × 18: 35 × 18 = 630, and two decimal places give 6.30 = 6.3. Work out 4.5 ÷ 0.09: multiply both by 100, 450 ÷ 9 = 50.
Class activity

Check by the opposite. Pick a multiplication and a division from this lesson, work them out on paper, then check each with the opposite operation (use division to check the multiplication and multiplication to check the division). Explain to the grown-up why the check works.
