The henry and eddy currents

Physics Sec 3 Term 1, Chapter 3: pp. 67–72
GoalUse the henry as V·s/A, say what the self-inductance depends on, and explain eddy currents.
New words
henry (H) · the unit of L and M: 1 H = 1 V·s/A = 1 Ω·seddy currents · closed loops of current induced inside a solid piece of metal by a changing flux; they heat the metallaminations · thin sheets of iron, insulated from each other, used to build cores so that eddy currents stay small
Explanation

A coil has a self-inductance of 1 henry if an emf of 1 volt is induced in it when its current changes at 1 ampere per second: 1 H = 1 V ÷ (A/s) = 1 V·s/A. The value of L depends on the coil itself: it grows with the number of turns, with the size of the coil, and when the turns are close together, and it grows a great deal if the coil is wound on a soft-iron core, because the core has a high permeability. Eddy currents are the same effect inside solid metal. A changing flux induces emfs in a metal block, and the metal itself closes the circuit, so loops of current swirl inside it and heat it (the heating is I²R). An induction furnace uses this on purpose: a coil carrying a rapidly changing current surrounds the metal, which heats up without any flame touching it. In transformers and motors the heat is a waste, so their cores are built from thin insulated sheets that break the loops into small ones.

Change to the coilEffect on L

turns spread far apartL smaller
current changed fasterL unchanged (only the emf is larger)
Worked examples
An emf of 12 V is induced in a coil while its current changes at 4 A/s. L = 12 ÷ 4 = 3 H.
A coil of 250 mH has a current changing at 80 A/s. Convert first: 250 mH = 0.25 H. |emf| = 0.25 × 80 = 20 V.

Two cores of the same iron have the same shape. One is a solid block, the other is a stack of thin insulated sheets. A changing flux passes along both. The solid block lets large eddy loops form and gets hot; in the stack each loop is confined to one thin sheet, so the loops are small and little heat is made.
Class activity

Paper practice. Rank these three coils by their L from smallest to largest and explain: (A) 500 turns on an air core; (B) 250 turns on an air core of the same size; (C) 500 turns on a soft-iron core of the same size. Then explain why the iron of a transformer is cut into thin insulated sheets.

Practice
1
An emf of 36 V is induced in a coil while its current changes at 9 A/s. Find L.
2
A coil of 50 mH has its current changing at 120 A/s. Find the size of the emf.
3
A coil of 2.5 H has its current change by 0.6 A in 0.02 s. Find the size of the emf.
4
Why are the iron cores of transformers and motors made of thin insulated sheets instead of one solid block?
