The force on a current-carrying wire and Fleming’s left-hand rule

Physics Sec 3 Term 1, Chapter 2: pp. 36–41
GoalFind the size and the direction of the force on a straight wire that carries a current in a magnetic field.

Explanation

A wire that carries a current in a magnetic field feels a force, because the field acts on the moving charges in the wire. The force is perpendicular to the wire and also perpendicular to the field. Its size is F = BIℓ sin θ, where ℓ is the length of wire in the field and θ is the angle that the wire makes with the direction of the field. It is largest at θ = 90°, where F = BIℓ, and zero when the wire lies along the field (θ = 0°). More current, a longer wire or a stronger field gives a bigger force. The direction comes from Fleming’s left-hand rule: hold the forefinger, middle finger and thumb of the left hand at right angles; the forefinger points along the field B, the middle finger along the conventional current I, and the thumb shows the force F. Reverse the current or the field and the force reverses; reverse both and it stays the same. In this course directions are given as east, north and up.

B = 0.4 T, I = 5 A and ℓ = 0.2 m. With the wire at 90° to the field, F = BIℓ = 0.4 × 5 × 0.2 = 0.4 N. At 30°, F = 0.4 × 5 × 0.2 × sin 30° = 0.2 N. Along the field (0°), F = 0.
The field points north and the current flows east. Forefinger north, middle finger east: the thumb points up. The force on the wire is upward.

Keep the field pointing north but reverse the current so that it flows west: the force is downward. Now take the field pointing east and the current flowing north: the force is downward.
Class activity

Left-hand practice. Hold your left hand with the thumb, forefinger and middle finger at right angles. Using the table in Example 3, point the forefinger along the field and the middle finger along the current, and check that your thumb gives the force in the table. Then make up three new cases of your own, write them in a table and swap tables with a friend to check each other.

Practice
1
A wire of length 0.5 m carries 8 A at right angles to a field of 0.25 T. Find the force.
2
A wire of length 0.8 m carries 2.5 A in a field of 0.6 T, at 30° to the field. Find the force.
3
A wire of length 0.3 m carries 6 A at right angles to a field and feels a force of 0.9 N. Find B.
4
The field points up and the current flows east. In which direction is the force?
