Resistors in parallel

Physics Sec 3 Term 1, Chapter 1: pp. 8–12
GoalFind the equivalent resistance of resistors in parallel, and the current in each branch and in total.
New words
parallel connection · resistors joined between the same two points, so that the charge can choose between several pathsbranch · one of the separate paths of a parallel connectionreciprocal · one divided by a number: the reciprocal of R is 1 ÷ R
Explanation

In a parallel connection every resistor is joined between the same two points, so the same voltage is across each branch. The charge can choose between the branches, so the branch currents add up to the total current: I = I₁ + I₂ + I₃. Each branch obeys I = V ÷ R, and this gives the rule for the equivalent resistance: 1 ÷ R = 1 ÷ R₁ + 1 ÷ R₂ + 1 ÷ R₃. For two resistors it can be written R = R₁R₂ ÷ (R₁ + R₂), and for N equal resistors of r each, R = r ÷ N. Every new branch gives the charge one more path, so the equivalent resistance is smaller than the smallest resistor, and the branch with the smallest resistance carries the largest current. Solve in this order: find R, find the total current V ÷ R, find the branch currents V ÷ R₁ and so on, and check that they add up to the total.

A 12 Ω and a 6 Ω resistor are in parallel on 12 V. R = (12 × 6) ÷ (12 + 6) = 72 ÷ 18 = 4 Ω. The branch currents are 12 ÷ 12 = 1 A and 12 ÷ 6 = 2 A, and 1 + 2 = 3 A, which equals 12 ÷ 4.
Three equal resistors of 30 Ω are in parallel. R = r ÷ N = 30 ÷ 3 = 10 Ω.
Resistors of 4 Ω, 12 Ω and 6 Ω are in parallel. 1 ÷ R = 1/4 + 1/12 + 1/6 = 3/12 + 1/12 + 2/12 = 6/12, so R = 2 Ω, smaller than the smallest resistor (4 Ω).
Class activity

Paper only, no wires. Fill in a table for a 6 V source with 1, 2 and 3 identical 12 Ω lamps in parallel: the equivalent resistance and the total current each time. What happens to the total current when you add a lamp, and why must the source be able to supply it? Never join a wire straight across a cell to test an idea: it can get hot.
