Writing an argumentative essay: claim, reasons and the other side

English Secondary 3 Term 1, Unit 2 Lesson 5: pp. 34–35
GoalPlan and write a short argumentative essay with a claim, two reasons, the other side and a conclusion.
New words
claim · your opinion on a question, stated clearlyreason · a fact or idea that supports your claimevidence · an example or a fact that shows that a reason is trueopposing view · what people on the other side thinkrefute · to show politely that an idea is weaklinking word · a word that joins ideas, such as however or because
Explanation

An argumentative essay has five parts. The introduction states your claim in one sentence. Two body paragraphs give one reason each, with an example or a school fact that you can explain. The next part shows the opposing view and answers it politely. The conclusion repeats the claim in new words. Use phrases for each job: In my opinion and I believe that state a claim; firstly, secondly, because and for example support it; however and on the other hand introduce the other side; in conclusion and to sum up end the essay. Be fair: attack the idea, never the person, and use examples from school life, not numbers that you cannot check. You can use reported speech to show the other side: Some people say that students will bring snacks. For this lesson write 70 to 90 words. Your book has a draft essay on page 34 with its paragraphs out of order, and a task of 180 to 200 words on page 35; our frame will help you to plan it.

Worked examples

Should the school canteen stop selling fried snacks? In my opinion, it should, because healthy food helps students to think. Firstly, fried snacks make many students sleepy after break. For example, our class finds it hard to concentrate in the last lesson. Secondly, the canteen can sell fruit and sandwiches at the same price. However, some people say that students will bring snacks from outside. This may be true, but a clear rule can help. In conclusion, the canteen should choose healthier food.

Read our model essay of 83 words.
The claim is in the second sentence: the canteen should stop selling fried snacks. The question in the first sentence introduces the topic.
Reasons and example: Firstly, fried snacks make students sleepy; for example, the class finds it hard to concentrate in the last lesson. Secondly, fruit and sandwiches cost the same.
The other side: However, some people say that students will bring snacks from outside. The writer answers politely with: This may be true, but a clear rule can help.
Linking words: However shows a contrast (Fried snacks are cheap. However, they are not healthy.). Because gives a reason. For example introduces an example.

Your essay. Write 70 to 90 words: Should there be no homework on weekends? State your claim, give two reasons with an example, show the other side with However and finish with In conclusion. Underline the linking words. If you can, write up to 120 words.
