Looking back at Term 1: my portfolio paragraph
A portfolio paragraph is a short personal text about your learning. Use four parts: 1. an opening sentence (Looking back at Term 1 …); 2. two or three things that you can now do, each with a real example; 3. your best lesson and one challenge; 4. a goal for next term. Use the present perfect for what you have learned (I have learned …), the past simple for a finished event (I wrote a blog post), and will or my goal is to for the future. Choose real examples from your notebook. Write 70 to 90 words; if you can, you may write up to 120. The table below shows six things that you studied in Term 1. Pick the ones that are true for you and put each in a sentence of your own.
| I can … | Example sentence | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| use the present perfect | I have been reading for an hour. | 1 |
| report what people said | My teacher said that I had improved. | 2 |
| guess with modals | She must be at the library; the light is on. | 3 |
| use compound adjectives | We took a five-minute break. | 4 |
| use the causative | I got my bike repaired. | 5 |
| report a question | He asked where I had put the keys. | 6 |
Looking back at Term 1, I have learned a lot. I have been practising the present perfect, and I can report what people said and asked. I use must and might when I am not sure. I like compound adjectives, such as a ten-minute walk. Last month I had my notes printed, and my friends asked if they could borrow them. My best lesson was the review, because it taught me to give a fair opinion. My goal for Term 2 is to read a story every week.
Write your own portfolio paragraph of 70 to 90 words (up to 120) called “Looking back at Term 1”. Use your own examples, at least three grammar points from the table, one challenge and one goal for Term 2. Read it aloud to a grown-up and ask one question about it.
