Listening to a talk on future skills: notes and True / False

English Secondary 3 Term 1, Unit 5 Lesson 2: pp. 72–73
GoalListen to a talk about skills for a summer job, take notes in a table and decide True or False.
New words
communication · sharing information so that others understandflexibility · being ready to change plansemotional intelligence · understanding feelings, yours and other people’sdigital literacy · using digital tools well and safelyhelper · a person who works to support othershabit · something you do regularly
Explanation

Before you listen, read the questions and the headings of the notes table. While you listen, write only key words: skill names, numbers and reasons. Do not write full sentences. Use short forms such as comm. for communication. Listen a second time to fill the gaps. A talk often uses First, Second, Third to order its points: these words help you note the points in order. For True / False items, find the words in your notes that prove or disprove the sentence. The book’s listening on page 72 has its own topic; our talk is from a shop owner at a school careers morning. For the book’s role-play (page 73) choose three skills and give a reason for each.

Worked examples

Good morning, everybody. I run a small print shop, and every summer I take four helpers. I do not only look at marks. First, I look for communication: a helper must listen and explain things clearly. Second, I look for flexibility, because a customer may change the job at the last minute. Third, I look for emotional intelligence, which means understanding how other people feel and staying calm. Fourth, I look for digital literacy: a helper must use our computers and the printer safely. Each helper works twenty hours a week for six weeks. Skills can be learned, so my advice is to start one new habit this month.

Listen. A grown-up reads it aloud once or twice.
Notes: print shop; 4 helpers each summer; skills: communication, flexibility, emotional intelligence, digital literacy; 20 hours a week; 6 weeks; advice: start one new habit this month.
Calculation: each helper works 20 hours a week for 6 weeks, so 20 × 6 = 120 hours. All four helpers together work 4 × 20 = 80 hours in one week.
True or False: “The owner looks only at marks.” False. She says she does not only look at marks, and she lists four skills.
Class activity

Make a notes table for the talk with three columns: skill, reason, example. Then choose three skills that a first summer helper in a library needs and write one sentence for each, with because.

Practice
1
How many helpers does the shop owner take each summer?
2
Why is flexibility important in the shop?
3
True or False: Emotional intelligence means understanding how other people feel.
4
How many hours does one helper work in all?
5
Write the owner’s advice at the end in your own words.
