The moment from coordinates: M = x·Fy − y·Fx for a force (Fx, Fy) acting at (x, y), and finding the arm from L = |M| / F
Applied Mathematics Sec 3 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 1, Part 1
GoalFind the moment of a force from coordinates with M = x Fy − y Fx, understand its sign, and recover the arm from L = |M| / F.
New words
position (x, y) · the coordinates of a point on the line of action, measured from the moment centre Ocomponents (Fx, Fy) · the parts of the force along the x-axis and the y-axis, written F = Fx i + Fy jalgebraic measure of the moment · the signed number M: positive anticlockwise, negative clockwise; |M| is its size
Explanation
Drawing an arm is not always easy, so we use coordinates. Put the moment centre at the origin O. A force F = (Fx, Fy) acts at a point (x, y) of its line of action. Split it into its two parts. The vertical part Fy acts at horizontal distance x from O, so its arm is x and its moment is x Fy: an upward force to the right of O turns anticlockwise (positive), an upward force to the left turns clockwise (negative), and the sign of x does exactly that. The horizontal part Fx acts at height y above O, and a rightward force above O turns clockwise, so its moment is −y Fx. Adding the two gives M = x Fy − y Fx. This number is positive for anticlockwise turning and negative for clockwise. You can check that it does not matter which point of the line of action you take: moving the point by t along the force changes M by t Fx Fy − t Fy Fx = 0. If the moment centre is another point B, replace (x, y) by the position of the point of action measured from B, that is A − B. Once M is known, the arm is L = |M| / F, where F = √(Fx² + Fy²). (Pure Mathematics will soon write this same number as r × F; you do not need that yet.)
Worked examples
F = (−4, 3) N acts at A(3, 2). Moment about O: M = x Fy − y Fx = 3 × 3 − 2 × (−4) = 9 + 8 = 17 N·m, positive, so anticlockwise. The force is √(16 + 9) = 5 N, so the arm is L = 17 / 5 = 3.4 m.
F = (6, −8) N acts at A(3, 2); find its moment about B(−1, 1). The position of A measured from B is A − B = (4, 1). M = 4 × (−8) − 1 × 6 = −32 − 6 = −38 N·m, negative, so clockwise. The force is 10 N, so the arm is 38 / 10 = 3.8 m.
A force (−3, k) N acts at (2, 5) and its moment about O is zero. Then 2 × k − 5 × (−3) = 2k + 15 = 0, so k = −7.5. Check: the force (−3, −7.5) is parallel to the position (2, 5), so its line of action passes through O.
Class activity
On squared paper mark O and a point A with whole-number coordinates. Draw a force arrow from A, with components of your choice, and measure the perpendicular distance from O to its line with a ruler. Multiply by the length of the arrow and compare with x Fy − y Fx computed from the grid. They agree up to measuring error.
Practice
1
F = (2, 5) N acts at (4, 1). Find its moment about O (anticlockwise positive).
M = 4 × 5 − 1 × 2 = 18 N·m (anticlockwise).
2
F = (−3, −4) N acts at (1, −2). Find its moment about O (anticlockwise positive) and the arm.
M = 1 × (−4) − (−2) × (−3) = −4 − 6 = −10 N·m (clockwise). F = 5 N, so L = 2 m.
3
F = (5, 0) N acts at (0, 3). Find its moment about O (anticlockwise positive), and say which way it turns.
M = 0 × 0 − 3 × 5 = −15 N·m: clockwise (a rightward push above O).
4
F = (0, −6) N acts at (−2, 0). Find its moment about O (anticlockwise positive).
M = (−2) × (−6) − 0 × 0 = +12 N·m: anticlockwise (a downward force to the left of O).
5
A student writes the moment of F = (2, 6) acting at (3, 1) about O as 3 × 2 − 1 × 6 (anticlockwise positive). What mistake is this, and what is the correct moment?
The components are swapped. The correct moment is x Fy − y Fx = 3 × 6 − 1 × 2 = 16 N·m (anticlockwise).
